Roy Deza and Celeste Hemphill Receive NASA Safety Award in 2013

On August 11, 2011, PEC Industrial Hygienists Roy Deza and Celeste Hemphill were at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) conducting an Industrial Hygiene (IH) survey with a code director when a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck approximately 80 miles southwest of the Washington DC area. Roy and Celeste immediately stopped the survey and they, as well the other members of the Occupational Safety & Health Division Support Team (pictured below), went into Emergency Mode.

With an MSA Orion multigas meter and MiniRAE 2000 PID in hand, Roy and Celeste continuously coordinated with NASA security and Incident Command via two-way radio. They checked for chemical spills/leaks and ensured that GSFC buildings were safe for occupants that needed to retrieve items necessary to leave the site. The team continued to provide emergency support until all of the buildings were cleared and personnel had evacuated safely.

As a result of the excellent safety support and teamwork involved during the emergency response to the August 2011 earthquake, each member of the team received the 2012 Robert H. Goddard Exceptional Achievement for Safety Award. Certificates were presented to the team on March 20, 2013.
